The World of Physics
Physics studentsOn Tuesday 3 July a group of 13 Year 10 students travelled to the University of Hull to take part in an event organised by the Institute of Physics (Yorkshire branch). The event involved a series of lectures and practical workshops which were all related to the students science GCSE studies.

The day started with an engaging lecture on ‘The physics of computer games’ where students heard about the physics behind some of the latest computer games and also future developments which will be appearing in the next release of top end games.
There then followed a series of hands on workshops covering topics such as low temperature physics (where pupils made and ate ice cream), physics of polymers, electronics and optics.

The final event was a very entertaining and highly appropriate lecture entitled ‘The life and death of stars’.  This was given by an astronomer from the Yorkshire Planetarium at Harewood House.

The students were a credit to the school throughout the day – well done to all.

Mr J Lodge, Physics/Science Teacher

Tour of Britain races through Mytholmroyd

Sam Larner

When the Tour of Britain cycle race speeds through Calderdale later this year, the competitors will be following a route suggested by a Calder High School student. Sam Larner, 14, wrote to the race organisers last year with some innovative route changes, and did the same again this year. His ideas were taken on board by British Cycling which organises the race, and Sam was invited to the press launch of the event.

He went to London last week with his father, Dai, also a keen cyclist, to face the press as the 2007 Tour of Britain route was unveiled to the world’s media. “It was great – a really exciting day,” said Sam, who competes in cycle circuit racing at Ogden and belongs to a family of keen cyclists. “I wrote to the organisers last year one day when I was bored, and they followed up my suggestions.”

This year’s race will start in Gateshead on September 9 and finish in London on 14 September. And on 12 September the cyclists will race along Burnley Road in Mytholmroyd, just below Calder High School, thanks to Sam.
