2006/7
Science and Maths SATS results: "Best ever for Calder High!"

Year 9 pupils have just achieved the best ever results. 81% of pupils achieved Level 5 or better and 53% of pupils achieved Level 6 or better. The results are well above the national average and the number of pupils who have achieved Level 6 or above is comparable to the top 25% nationally with similar schools to Calder High. This is a tremendous achievement and a deserved reward for all the hard work that both staff and students have done.
The 'Star Achievers in Science' include; Alex Christodolou, Matthew Dawson, Saba Faiz, Annie Faulds, Joe Ferguson, Thomas Lockett, Isaac Rose, Joshua Rushton-Crawshaw, Matthew Wedge-Roberts and Ailish Woolett. All these students have made the biggest progress compared to their KS2 Science level.
The following pupils scored the best marks in the 5-7 and the 3-6 papers.

Dialogue in Science

A film crew spent the day in school on Wednesday 20 June. They were filming material for a DVD the government is preparing for teacher training and professional development. The theme is discussion in science classrooms, particularly when teaching 'hard' concepts. The stars of the show were science teacher, Mr J Emberton and twenty Year 9 students and the topic was 'electric circuits'. There was a crew of seven (!) from Straker Productions. It was hot in the science lab with all the extra lighting, but great fun and the students had a good look at the film and sound equipment afterwards.

Science Fun
"Year 9 having completed their Science SATS last week have embarked on a series of lessons trying to get the fun back into Science. Students have been partaking in lessons on 'exploding sandwich bags', 'forensic science', 'making volcanoes' , and dancing raisins. This will fill the gap between finishing their SATS and starting the new GCSE after half term. We would like to congratulate all of Y9 in their hard work leading up to the SATS"

Enrichment Days: 24/25 May: Technology

| Ready, Steady, Cook! This was a great success on Thursday 24 May. The students spent some time planning their dishes and then they all had the same cooking time to create them. |
Health Awareness Day:
 |
| As part of the healthy eating promotional event, students were able to try out a number of specially prepared dishes and decide which they liked best. |
 |
Students were asked to create posters depicting five fresh fruit and vegetables that could be included in their diet each day. |
Once again, Year 9 students were involved in a Health Awareness Day. The school nurse team were involved in the promotion sexual health awareness. There was also the chance to explore internet sites designed for young people giving really useful information on health issues as well as a healthy eating promotional event with a session tasting foods produced in the school diner. Speakers from Shelter and Crisis also came in to highlight the dangers of running away from home. The event has run for over 5 years and each year has proved very successful and informative for our students.
Imperial War Museum Year 9 History Trip

Comments from students:
"I liked the impressions of war exhibit because everything was so big. I liked the hands-on part - I never would have thought I would hold a grenade. The Big Picture Show was good because it told us about people's memories of the wars and what Hitler had done. It gave us an insight into what it would have been like for children in the wars. The process of evacuation was horrible."
"There was a story about a man who wrote a letter to his family and later that night on watch duty he was killed. He said in the letter that the smell was disgusting as there were corpses everywhere."
"There was a big tank there, and I liked that because on the front it said that this tank survived 36 German rounds."
"We also looked at information about what women did during the war - they made bombs and cooked food for the men!"
"I thought the toilets were very nice and clean!"

'Grease'
Danny and Sandy recalled their Summer Nights, and the whole affair went as smoothly as Greased Lightning. It was a very different sort of exam. No sitting in a quiet hall, chewing the end of a pencil and waiting for inspiration. Instead the Year 9 students on the pilot BTEC diploma in performing arts at Calder High took to the stage and sang and danced for the examiners.
Two groups of students performed the musical Grease on two nights at the Leeds Carriageworks Theatre. They had also largely directed their own productions.
Drama teacher, Ms Sam McAleese said: “The whole group pulled together and worked tremendously hard over the year, throwing themselves into extra rehearsals, and they should all be very proud of their achievements.”
