The school celebrates its best ever GCSE results (August 2007)

Exam results at GCSE level have put Calder High School in the top 10% of comprehensives in the country. A list published by 'The Times' placed Calder High in the top 500 schools, based on A/A* grades. But as head teacher Stephen Ball has pointed out to staff, governors and parents, there are 150 selective grammar schools included in that list.

“This means we fell into the top 350 comprehensives with almost 1 grade in 5 being A or A*. This places us in the top 10% using that measure alone,” he said. “This is something to celebrate and be both delighted about and professionally very proud of.”

The school has been reflecting on the best ever results in its 57-year history, and the chair of governors, Bryan Mensforth, had special praise for the staff. He told their start of term conference: “The Governors want you to be fully aware that we are immensely proud of what you have done over the last 12 months. We believe that Calder will be achieving even more over the next few years.”

His ambition was echoed by Mr Ball who told the staff conference, and a meeting of parents of new sixth formers: “It is fantastic to achieve more than anyone who has gone before. But I would describe this as our natural territory. The challenge now is to deliver top class performance, to become a high performing specialist school in which 60% get 5 higher grades including English and maths. That has to be our aspiration.”

Meanwhile the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust has been impressed by the Calder High results. In a letter to Mr Ball they say that the results “represent a very significant improvement which is impressive by any standards”. They add: “We are interested in capturing your views on what has made a difference.”
