Fundraising for the 2011 trip

Helping hand from 'No Hands'

Eleven Calder VI students and three members of staff will be taking part in the fourth Uganda project, organised by the Great Generation Charity, in July. The group is indebted to the continuing support from the “No Hands Massage” Clinic in Hebden Bridge. Once again, the company has contributed over £1,500 to the fundraising project.

Mr Howard and Great Generation students accept the cheque at "No Hands Massage" in Hebden BridgeDirector of Calder VI, Mike Howard, commented “the ongoing support from No Hands makes an enormous contribution to our fundraising efforts each year. It is so gratifying to receive the outstanding support from a local company, to help the development of our students, and to provide such a worthwhile experience for them and the community we work with in Uganda”.

Gerry Pyves, Founder and Managing Director of No Hands Massage, added: “We are delighted to continue to support this annual project with our local school. It is marvellous to think that receiving a massage can benefit not only our clients but also our local comprehensive and the community in Uganda.”  No Hands continue to offer a massage for a £10 donation to the Calder High Great Generation Project which is donated by the company.

Please contact any of the No Hands staff on 01422 843777 for further details. This year’s Great Generation team leave for Uganda on 16 July and in the meantime, their fundraising efforts will continue.

Great Generation: Calder High's inspirational youth
Great Generation team
The Sixth Form Centre at Calder High, ‘Calder VI’, is currently undertaking a array of fundraising activities that will finance an expedition to Uganda; possibly proving a life-changing experience for the students involved. The venture will stand students in exceptional stead as they tread their first footsteps into adulthood. Yet another remarkable example of the school’s attitude towards encouraging its students to achieve extraordinary goals that go beyond the standard curriculum.

Funds will come from student-run activities and events, such as an up-coming attempt on the World Record for ‘bunting’. Other events include a French Exchange Disco, Friday 8 April, which will not only raise money for the cause, but endorse the school’s capacity for Modern Languages; providing an opportunity for students in lower school to mix and converse with students from another country. An event is also set for inter-form trampolining, which will include prizes for ‘Best Bounce’, ‘Best Fancy-dress’ and ‘Most Bounces per Minute’. And for our beauty queens, a ‘Pamper and Purchase’ party will be held, where parents and staff will experiment with and buy cosmetics.

To date, Sixth Formers have sold homemade cakes, second-hand books, and raffle tickets at Year 7 parents evening, which took place on Thursday 10 March, and was held on their own turf in Calder VI. Local business, Harvey’s of Halifax, have donated a shop window in which students will create a display advertising the expedition, to raise awareness and further funds, for which the school is most grateful.

If you would like to make a donation to this worthy cause, please contact Mr M Howard on 01422 889918 or email mhoward@calderhigh.calderdale.sch.uk.

Spaghetti bath for Shari

Spaghetti bath
"On Friday 14 January I did a spaghetti bath to raise money for The Great Generation project. I chose to do it with spaghetti as I had heard of the classic baked bean bath, but never a spaghetti bath. So, I thought it would be unusual, new & unique. I knew that people would be disgusted by it, so would be more likely to donate than something less gruesome. The majority of people assumed I was joking!

It felt horrible in the spaghetti bath because it was cold & squidgy, and the strands were going in between my toes. I let people pour buckets of spaghetti over my head as well which covered my hair with sloppy sauce. I smelt of tomato for days, even after multiple showers. However the atmosphere on the day was great, it was for a good cause and I raised around £500. Many thanks to everyone who contributed."

Shari O'Regan, Year 12

Fundraising for the 2010 trip
(Contact the Great Generation Team 2010 by emailing them)

Fundraising efforts are reaching a climax at Calder VI where the Great Generation team are preparing for their trip to Africa. A group of students and teachers will spend two weeks in a disadvantaged community in Uganda, the third visit made by the school as part of the Great Generation scheme.

The students have to raise all the funds to make the trip so that they can work with the local people and help them develop skills for the future. Efforts so far have included sky-diving, supermarket bag-packing, and car washing. Sixth-former Patrick Boyle was sponsored to spend a week on a diet of matoke, a kind of plantain which is the staple diet in Uganda.

Support has been received from the school’s partner Sweet and Maxwell, from the Round Table and Rotary Clubs, and from the No Hands Massage team who have donated a total of £3,400 to the fund over three years.

Mr Mike Howard, head of sixth form, said: “We are really grateful to all those who have supported our fundraising, and the team is really looking forward to this year’s trip.”

Calder's Got Talent
T
his is the 3rd Calder High’s Got Talent event to take place. Auditions will commence on Friday 18th June at lunch in the theatre and the final will take place in the Ted Hughes Theatre on the evening of 7th July.

Competition is usually very strong, and the event is always sold out – so please push this and consider whether staff would like to get involved. Previous winners have gone on to fantastic careers as local celebrities – it’s been the stepping stone for all their hopes and dreams being fulfilled.

All money raised goes to the Great Generation fund – so all in a good cause too.

17 December: Sprout eating competition

A festive fundraiser held Thursday lunchtime.

The challenge: how many sprouts can you eat in 1 minute! (The current world record is 53!).

It's just £1 to enter. The event is open to all staff and students and the winner will receive a cash prize.

See the poster for more info.

13 to 20 December: Patrick's Bananathon

Unenviably, Patrick is preparing to eat only millet (used here as bird feed) and matoke (similar to a banana) which are both staple foods of a Ugandan diet - for a whole week! Please see Patrick in person and sponsor generously.

21/22 December: Bag Pack at Sainsbury's, Halifax
Well done to all the students who gave up some time in the Christmas Holidays to take part in a Charity “Bag Pack” at Sainsbury’s in Halifax. They did this to raise money for their Chosen Charity – The Laura Crane Trust. They manned the tills from 10.00pm – 3.00pm and braved the snow and ice to get there so even though the supermarket was quieter than usual they still managed to raise a massive…£274 – wow!
The “bag packing” superstars are…Khloe, Sean, Rowan, Laura, Hannah, Chelsea, Bethany, Claire & Annie

1 January 2010: New Year's Day Treasure Hunt
The New Year's Day Treasure Hunt raised a total of £150 in aid of the Great Generation Project. A total of 30 families entered the treasure hunt in wintry conditions and fun was had by all. The Hunt entailed a nice scenic walk around the countryside of Mytholmroyd with clues spread throughout for families to solve. Keen walker Iain Dale, said, "It was lovely to start 2010 off this way, the walk itself was really enjoyable and it's an added bonus to support a charity such as the Great Generation in the process" Many more events will take place in 2010, with the Big Night Out, 29th January the next in line. More information on this event will be released shortly.
