Calder High School was opened in January 1950 and takes pride of place as Yorkshire’s first comprehensive school. The school catered for some three hundred and fifty students on its opening - a big change from the community of one thousand five hundred students and staff who work here today. Calder High School is now a Co-operative Trust School in The Calder Learning Trust with Brooksbank Sports College and Calderdale Local Authority.
We are situated in the heart of Pennine Yorkshire, in the village of Mytholmroyd approximately six miles west of Halifax. The school serves the Calder Valley, stretching from Halifax through Luddendenfoot, then Mytholmroyd, and beyond to the town of Hebden Bridge and the borders of Todmorden.
Calder High School is fortunate in housing the renowned Ted Hughes Theatre which was opened by the poet’s widow, Carol Hughes, in 2007. It is a popular venue for school and community events through which the school has achieved the prestigious Artsmark Gold award. The school is decorated with quotations from Ted Hughes’ poetry, celebrating our literacy heritage through his connection with Mytholmroyd and the school.
Our Sixth Form, which enjoys a separate state-of-the-art building including social area, attracts students from across Halifax and the Calder Valley.
We aim for our students in Years 7-13 to become confident, responsible and articulate young people, supported within and beyond the curriculum and engaging in the fantastic range of opportunities available at Calder High School. These include camps with the Outward Bound Trust, sporting events and competitions, Expressive Arts activities, a move into international volunteering for Sixth Form students and much, much more.
Here at Calder High School we aim for every student to achieve their very best every day.
