"Awesome activities organised by Calder High School"
That's how youngsters from local feeder primary schools responded to the Spring Bank activity package led by SSCo Mary Smith and a team of coaches at Calder High School.
The aim of the program is to offer young people new interacting experiences through sport. This year the Spring Bank holiday certainly challenged the youngsters giving them an opportunity to step into a whole new world at Halifax Boxing Club.
Instructed by caring professionals, initial fears were thrown aside when the chance of a "spar with the guys in the ring" was offered. A great time was had by all and by the end of the week the group had formed new frienships, their fitness level had improved tremendously and most importantly self confidence exuded.
For those who wish to train on a regular basis, junior training sessions are held at the club on Old Lane on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 6-7pm. For more information contact Cathy on 01422 241460.

Calderdale Schools XC Championships

Several Year 9, 11 and 13 students represented Calder High in the Calderdale Schools XC Championships this week in awful, blustery, wet wet wet conditions!!
The overall team performances were fantastic with the Y9 girls team achieving a close 3nd place. Rebecca Sullivan Y8 who trains and competes for the Halifax Harriers fought hard to achieve an excellent 3rd place.

Both senior boys teams performed particularly well with excellent individual performances from George Bamford 4th, Joel Cleary 7th, Sam Talbot 2nd and Matthew Ball in 8th place.

They now go on to represent Calderdale in the West Yorkshire Schools XC Championship at Batley Grammar in the New Year. A massive well done to all of you!

Hannah Jones and Debbie Bates, Year 13 (pictured here with David Scott) helped out as stewards at "Alice's Run" an event which takes place every year in memory of Alice Redmond who died tragically in 2005. The 10km race raises money for epilepsy action, a charity Alice was involved with. The day was a great success with more people than ever turning up to help the great cause - including David Scott, and Carley Stevenson (AKA Steph from Hollyoaks!)
This year's run took place on 2 September...visit the website for more information.

Calder High student Thomas Bamford steps up on the tennis ladder!
The Slazenger Calderdale Junior Tennis Championships took place on Friday 7 and Saturday 8 September attracting another record entry. Every year since the tournament was re-launched the entries have increased, this time peaking at 127. The competition included children aged 6 to 18, in 5 different age group categories and from a wide variety of tennis playing backgrounds - from those who started playing just two weeks ago to those who play several times a week. The largest entry was 38 in the under 13 boys, with Thomas Bamford (on the left), Queens Tennis Club, emerging the winner after 6 rounds of matches.
Over the summer a multitude of mums, dads and youngsters have been making good use of our new tennis site avidly attending tennis sessions organised Mary Smith, School Sports Co-ordinator and Paul Kendall from the Calderdale Tennis Partnership.
Two coaches, Angela Crossley and Charlotte Crystal from Queens Tennis Club, have delivered quality coaching to a wide variety of players from our community and the consensus is that tennis is great fun and a whole family activity!

A day in the diary of Year 6....
Friday 13 July was indeed one of the wettest on record for Year 6 Transition pupils visiting Calder High. They braved the conditions to take part in a tag rugby taster session with Frank Watane from Halifax Rugby League Club. They, along with the tennis group, coached by Charlotte from Queens Tennis Club were absolutely brilliant and thoroughly enjoyed their session - hardly noticing the rain! Well done to Year 6: the PE Faculty at Calder High School and Mrs Smith, Schools Sports Co-ordinator, are really proud of you all.

Junior Tennis Festival (report by Mrs Mary Smith, Schools Sports Co-ordinator)
Calder High hosted their very first Tennis Festival in December which involved our Year 7 students playing and Year 11 JSLA students officiating in their capacity as Young Leaders. Year 7 students were given a handicap whilst playing Years 5 and 6 and although the weather was cold it remained dry for once! We have some gifted and talented tennis players in Year 7 and have now established the Calder Junior Tennis Club which meets on a Tuesday evening 3-4pm on the courts. We would love to see more students attending coaching sessions and this is an open invitation to all out there - don't miss out on this fantastic opportunity.

Whilst Years 5/6/7 were out on the courts Years 3 and 4 players from Burnley Road, Hebden Royd, Scout Rd and Riverside took part in a mini red tennis event in the gyms. Once again, these children are part of the group who attend sessions at Calder High on a Tuesday evening, 4 to 5pm. As this was our first event there were hiccups but the JSLA students, along with Paul Kendall from Tennis in the Community, ensured we had a really good time. Children were sent home with their very own Calder Tennis Club Hat after the event!
