Leadership courses
Over the Easter holidays the PE staff at Calder High School ran three leadership qualifications for young people who have been targeted as having the potential to be excellent young sports leaders. There were three qualifications delivered: Young Sports Leader Award, Junior Football Organiser and Junior Netball Organisers.
The pupils showed dedicated to improving their skill base and CV through attended and work rate and demonstrated excellent commitment to the qualification and any further leadership opportunities.
Now that the qualification/s have been successfully achieved we are hoping to link the CHS pupils with a primary school to assist the delivery of after school sports activities, these details will be finalised at a later date.
Well done to:
Domic Bailey, James Speechly, Rhiannon Healey, Charlotte Gibbon, Amy Harris, Sam Cawkwell, Olga Machado-Legal, Sam Sharkey, Sam Clayton, Joe Fazakerley, Katie Harper, Jacob Dobson, George Gilling.

Young Sports Leaders' courses
Over the Easter holidays the PE staff at Calder High School will be hosting young people who have been targeted as having the potential to be excellent young sports leaders.
There will be three qualifications delivered:
- Young Sports Leader Award: Monday 18 April/Tuesday 19 April (12pm-4pm)
- Junior Football Organiser: Thursday 21 April (10-2pm)
- Junior Netball Organisers: Tuesday 26 April (10-2pm)
After the qualification has been successfully achieved we are hoping to link our students with a primary school to assist the delivery of after-school sports activities, details of which will be finalised at a later date.
The courses do incur a cost to deliver, but we are linking these leadership opportunities to the work being done to improve Sport and PE in our Bangladesh link school therefore, we are using International Inspiration funding to subsidise the overall cost. (It is £10 for 1 course or £15 for 2 or 3). The pupils have the opportunity to get their money back by volunteering for six hours putting their skills into practice.
The courses are both theoretical and practical, therefore particpants will need to wear appropriate kit and footwear and bring a pen.

Football coaching skills
Year 12 student Habib Akhtar’s ambition to become a Level 1 football coach came to fruition last term as his trail to source contacts and finance to help him on his way was spurred on through the PE faculty and the SSco.
Together they set about investigating courses through the West Riding Football Association and eventually were lucky enough to get a reserve place for Habib on a course which ran at Hipperholme & Lightcliffe School in early February.
The course required Habib to commit to learning new practical skills as well as planning football sessions in the half term holiday followed by a tough assessment at the end. To his credit, Habib completed the course and has been awarded his Level 1 Coaching Certificate by the FA. The SSCo program paid half the course fee with Habib contributing the rest and as a result Habib is paying back with voluntary coaching hours, gaining experience with two primary feeder schools; Luddenden Dene and Burnley Road. He has also taken on Year 7 football training sessions on a Monday after school which has helped tremendously with team progress and sustainability.
Well done to Habib and keep up the good work!

Super Leaders in the making

On Tuesday 9 March, Calder High School Year 8 students, Claudia Lees and Rebekah Rowlinson-Lord, were, without a doubt, ‘super leaders’ at the Hipperholme & Lightcliffe Partnership Cross Country Championships held at Spring Hall, Halifax.
The cumulative event was held for primary Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 students, whom make up the younger element of our Calder High ‘family’. Boys and girls from Burnley Road, Luddenden Dene, Midgley, Scout Road, and Riverside primary schools were lead by Claudia and Rebecca, who covered some considerable mileage by the end of the day!
The overall success of the event was testament to all the hard work that has been going on for some years now, as part of our Cross Country League. Two girls, Leteisha from Riverside, and Gemma from Midgley, achieved gold medals, while Thomas from Burnley Road, managed an outstanding achievement in his clinching 3rd place, despite running with an injured foot.
Calder High would like to extend its thanks to Claudia and Rebecca, who were a credit to the school; and to our Primary Link pupils, who were also outstanding.

Kiera United
Calder’s Kiera has been playing football for seven years; in part for Hebden Bridge Saints FC, which she joined when she was just 5. Also having joined the Calder High football team, Keira attended trials for the Under 12 West Ridings team, and was successfully selected. The team comprises girls from across the county who play competitive league games against representative teams from Hull, Nottingham and Lancashire; so to be selected at this level is indeed an achievement. Kiera’s parents have also been committed; to endless hours of coaching, to get Kiera and her team mates to where they are now.
Kiera’s family transport and support her during training in the week and for games at weekends. She is part of two teams, so her weekends are engulfed with football. Kiera hopes to study to be a PE teacher when she leaves school, and in the meantime would like to be trialed for teams that play countrywide.
Well done Team Kieira, it’s amazing what can be achieved with hard work and commitment.

Under 13 Calderdale Table Tennis Competition
 |
 |
Sixteen Year 7/8 students took part in what was for some their first taste of competitive matches yesterday at the Halifax Table Tennis Centre. Standards were high with one Crossley Heath student ranked number 23 in the country, taking on our lads. However they rose to the challenge and performed well with our teams being placed 5th, 6th and 8th out of 11 teams.
Well done to all Calder teams including our girls team who sadly had no opposition on the day. Year 8 Player of the Day was Shiraz Khan and Year 7 Charlie Mariani.

Charity Netball
Miss Davies (PE) was involved in a charity netball match at the start of September. She was representing the Welsh Netball team against the England Men’s netball team to raise money for help the heros. The match was held in Walsall, in front of a supportive crowd. The Men’s team used every dirty tactic in the book, even picking Miss Davies off the floor and carrying her under the post! The match was very enjoyable and a lot of money was raised for a very good cause
Outstanding golfer
Year 9 student Neeve Fisher scored an outstanding 7 under par 65 to win the EWGA North Regional Medal Final
which was played at Crompton & Royton in Lancashire. Neeve plays at Hebden Bridge Golf Club and out-played her nearest rivals to qualify for the EWGA Grand final which will be held at the Worcestershire Golf Club. The competition is run in association with Volvo.
This win tops off a great start to the season for Neeve and her handicap has now come down to 19.

Calderdale Schools U14 Cross Country success
Year 8 boys, alongside Max Wharton in Year 9, represented Calder High in the Calderdale Schools U14 Cross Country event at Hipperholme & Lightcliffe. The boys excelled in an event which was made up of Y9 runners all hoping to finish in the top 14 to secure a place in the West Yorkshire Schools Cross Country competition next year.Their individual ability, stamina and determination to compete as a team resulted in excellent personal achievements with Max finishing in 4th place running with a foot injury throughout! Year 8 students were outstanding - competing a year younger: Dan Vile placed 10th, Edan Whitelaw 15th, Finley King 20th and Jack Fillingham 25th.
Max and Dan go through to the West Yorkshire Schools event in February. Cracking performance lads, really well done.
Our girls running as individuals achieved personal best positions with Issy Wharton in Year 7 being our first runner home in 20th place - what a fantastic achievement! Congratulations also to Amy Godden and Anna Craven with commendable individual results.Well done!
