Netball
Well done to Ozzy Wilby and Francesca Barnes (7YC), Robyn Allanson (9XA) and Sophie Colbert (9XD) who have made the Yorkshire Terriers Netball Team. The Yorkshire Terriers is a well established Netball club that runs from Brooksbank Sports College (See poster for session times). The girls have been committed to improving their skills by attending training sessions and have cemented their position in the squad. I am sure that the girls will be representing their club regularly on a Sunday. Good luck in future games!

Due to the snowy conditions, there have been a few netball games cancelled this term. They are due to be replayed so watch this space for future updates!

The Year 7 netball team have done extremely well since they started playing for Calder High School in September. They recently took on Halifax High, and beat them 9-5. They were losing going into the 2nd time period of the game but some super sharp shooting from Lucy Wilby kept us in the game!

Well done to Lucy Wilby (captain), Kira Cunningham, Francesca Barnes (7YL), Mia Cameron- Foulger, Georgia Whitehouse, Ozzy Wilby and Martha Salter (who made her debut in the netball team).

Roller disco fun
The PE department rewarded those Calder High pupils who have excellent levels of participation and high standards of kit and behaviour, with the opportunity to attend a roller disco. Those who attended were very enthusiastic and enjoyed all the games and socialising that went on.

Tag Rugby team
Tag Rugby teamOn Tuesday 17 November nine Calder High Year 8 girls were invited to a Tag rugby festival at Park Lane School. In the lead up to the competition they had coaching assistance from Beth Greenwood (Huddersfield Ladies RFL player and Level 1 rugby coach), Mr Mitchell and Emily Crampton (Year 11).

The team of: Hebe Fitzsimmons, Amy Oliver, Olga Machado- Legal, Beth Sutcliffe, Rosie Orford, Katie Bridgeman, Kate Hillier, Kiera Janciewiez and Amy Harris played against four schools. They drew to Crossleys A team, lost to Brighouse and beat Park Lane and Crossleys B team.

This was a fantastic achievement from everyone involved. Many thanks to Mary Smith (SSCO) for accompanying the girls, and to Emily Crampton (11XD and Ovenden girls JRLFC player) for coaching the team on the day, and in the lead up to the competition.

Girls' Rugby Club is on a Wednesday after school from 3-4pm.

Calderdale Netball performances
The Under 15 Calder High netball team played in the Calderdale netball tournament held at Brooksbank Sports College this month (November 2009).

The dedicated team of Katie Glover (Captain), Otti Gauvain, Holly Talbot, Rebecca Broadbent, Sophie Shaw, Eloise Donaldson- Briggs and a guest player from year 8 Kiera Janicwiez, played fantastically well. They beat Brooksbank Sports College, drew with Hiperholme Grammar and came close to beating the netballing giants that are Brighouse. The girls performed with a lot of passion and were complemented by other teachers for their excellent play.

Well done to all involved. We are now looking forward to meeting Brooksbank again next week and taking on Ryburn.

Rising netball stars
Netball starsWell done to Olga Machado- Legal, Alice Timson, Becki Bartram, Kiera Janicwiez and Amy Ingram who were selected to attend the Calderdale U13 Netball trials. The girls performed very well and showed the selectors how much netballing talent they have.

Congratulations also to Olga who was successful in gaining a place in the squad. Olga will now train with the squad weekly with the aim to gain a place in the tournament team. Good luck!

Well done to Katie Glover who represented Calder High School at the recent under 15 Calderdale Netball trials. Katie performed very well and did the school proud.

Kiera Janicwiez has made the Yorkshire Terriers Netball Team. After attending just one training session the coach spotted her talent and she is playing her first game this Sunday. Good luck!

National Sport WeekStarting 29 June
National School Sport Week included lots of events and all students learned a new game in PE during the week. Students will also learnt about our link school in Bangladesh.

The week of Monday 29 June was National School Sports Week. The pupils of Calder High School celebrated the occasion by making 2 pledges; to learn a new sport and to do more sport. The first pledge was achieved in PE lessons with the whole school learning the Olympic sport, Handball. The pupils were enthusiastic to learn a new team game and used the skills learnt from other PE lessons to achieve some great moves and brilliant goals!

Handball Handball

The second pledge was facilitated by the PE department as they hosted a ‘one week only’ extra curricular timetable. There were 34 activities that ran before school, at lunch times and after school, for both pupils and staff. The pupils got a raffle ticket for every activity they attended, to enter a prize draw. With new sports such as roller hockey (run by Mr Wallis) and Mountain biking (held by Andy Gilyeat), the pupils' attendance was fantastic. Year 7 were exceptional and won the most prizes for fulfilling their second pledge.

Games

Games

The highlights of the week included Mr Potter’s playground games where Miss Davies bowed to popular demand and became a wolf! The year 7 inter-form rounders tournament, in which 7YC narrowly missed out in the final to 7XL, and Mr Muir’s climbing wall which he described as ‘a pleasure to supervise as the pupils were all very pleasant, enthusiastic and well behaved!’

Well done to John Horner who won the iPod in the raffle for those pupils who attended 5 or more clubs. Well done to all who were involved; what a fantastic event!

School Sports Ambassadors

Rounders coaching session Rounders

One of the schools sports ambassadors, Otti Gauvain showed rounders prowess when coaching the Year 7 rounders team recently, before their up and coming tournament. The School Sports Ambassadors is a new idea within the Hipperholme and Lightcliffe Sports Partnership and is an honour for the two pupils chosen from Calder High School; Otti Gauvain and Ben Barker. Otti and Ben are lined up to assist the local primary schools in their summer sports festivals and Ben is already involved with the Booth Cricket festival during National Sports Week.

Local Sports Awards
Congratulations are due to 3 sporting Calder High girls who have achieved excellent accolades in their sports.

Rebecca Sullivan, Year9, has been selected to attend an English Schools U15 athletics event in Sheffield next month. Rebecca runs 800 metres for Halifax Harriers but it is for her excellent High Jump skills that she has been chosen for the squad. Good luck to her in the competition.

Congratulations also to Amy Godden and Rhiannon Healey for their awards received at the Hebden Bridge Saints girls' football team celebration ceremony. Amy received the ‘players player’ award and Rhiannon was awarded ‘player of the year’. Well done to both girls.

National Bike Day 2009

Mountain Bike session Mountain bike session Mountain bike session

National Bike Day was a great success on Tuesday 16 June. Students from Years 7, 8 and 10 had a fantastic time in the different bike sessions throughout the day. They faced assault course challenges; filled with tough uphill climbs and obstacles to duck under and avoid. The sessions were run by Andy Geall, who is the Calderdale mountain bike guru. Extended mountain bike sessions have been running after school on Tuesdays from 3:00 to 4:00pm and have been very well attended. Well done to all involved.

Year 7 cricket team bow out in 3rd round

Year 7 Cricket teamCalder High's year 7 cricket team were finally beaten in a close match against a good Rishworth team. The game was played on a fine sunny evening perfect weather for cricket. Rishworth were put into bat first and played some nice shots all around the field. Calder didn't get off to the best of starts and conceded quite a lot of runs off the first few overs. They got a couple of wickets around the fourth over to slow the run rate down. Callum Wheelwright took a good catch and then Sam Sharkey managed to take an unbelievable catch which was easily the best of the tournament so far. George Hampshire and Callum Bowmer took the main share of the wickets with Tom Wiltshire, Callum Wheelwright, Sam Sharkey and Sam Clayton helping out with the bowling. Calder's fielding was slightly disapointing and there were a number of boundaries conceded that should have been stopped in the outfield. Rishworth posted a good score of 109 runs off their 20 overs.

Calder came out to bat knowing they would have to score highly to stay in the competition. Hampshire soon started stroking the ball to the boundary for a number of fours. However as he was just getting into his stride he was given out to a contentious LBW decision. This was a big blow to Calder and wickets started falling quite fast after that with Callum Bowmer, Sam Sharkey and Matt Bairstow following George back to the pavillion soon after. Callum Wheelwright and Tom Wiltshire did a fantastic job of steadying the ship with a number of middle order runs, both lads finding the boundary on a number of occasions. Calder still weren't scoring fast enough and had to start running for everything; this culminated in Tom being run out after going for a risky run. Dan Vile was the next person in and he went the same way as Tom being run out whilst diving for the crease. As the wickets fell the runs dried up for Calder and even though there was some good batting at the end by Callum Wheelwright and Sam Clayton the total was out of their reach. Calder scored 96 runs off their 20 overs falling just 14 runs short of the win.

The game was played in a good spirit by all the players and the boys should be proud of their progress in the tournament and the way they have conducted themselves throughout. It has been a magnificent achievement to get this far - being just two games away from the final. This experience should stand the boys in good stead for next years competition.

Well done!

Report by Mr R Slater

Year 7 Cricket team on form
Calder High's Year 7 cricket team are through to the second round of the prestigious Yorkshire schools cricket competition. As the school has never entered this competition before they had to start in the preliminary rounds of the competition. The first team they had to get past were from Ryburn school. Ryburn batted first and they were bowled out for just 60 runs. Sam Sharkey was the star of the bowling attack taking 4 wickets. Calder managed to knock off the runs they needed in just ten overs. George Hampshire was the top scorer for Calder posting a score of 27 not out.

In the next round we were drawn against Hipperholme and Lightcliffe school who have a fantastic record in this competition. Hipperholme chose to bat first and posted a score of 71 runs. Their score was kept down through great bowling from all Calder's bowlers, George Hampshire the star of the bowling attack taking the main of Hipperholmes wickets. Calder began their innings well sending the ball crashing to the boundary a number of times. Callum Bowmer hit an enormous six nearly losing the ball in the process. They soon reached their target with Callum Bowmer the star of the batting scoring 35 no. All the boys should be justifiably proud of themselves and will look forward to the next round of the competition.

Calderdale Cup Final - Winners!

After two nail-biting halves and a fantastic performance from our sixth form team, the final on Thursday evening against Hipperholme and Lightcliffe (a sports college!) finished 1 - 1 (a superb goal by Jack Earle) and then went to the dreaded penalties. But our lads kept their nerve and ended up winning 4 - 1 on penalties. A fantastic result...well done to the team and their coach, Mr Williams!

Young Cricket Leader

Ben at Headingley

Ben in Year 8, is one of Calder High School's Sports Ambassadors and very much "into cricket". Ben was invited to represent Calder High as a Young Cricket Leader at the Yorkshire V Sussex match at Headingly last Sunday. Students from Todmorden High School who have also completed their Young Leaders award also attaended. For Ben it was an opportunity to use his leadership skills supervising multi-skill sessions for young up and coming cricketers. However the chance to meet and greet the players was the ultimate reward! It was a day well spent for Ben with, hopefully, more to follow.

Year 9 PE Celebration trip to the 'Theatre of Dreams'
TrophiesOn 25 March, the postponed trip to Old Trafford (postponed due to snow) took place with 30 talented Year 9 students. The trip was offered to those students who have excelled in PE this year and taken part in extra-curricular activities.

After a talk on stadium and event safety, fitness and nutrition, the next stop was the trophy room. The four trophies currently held by Manchester United were on display and students were able to have their photos taken with them.

There was time to look around the museum before the tour of the stadium started. The tour took in the stands, the players' lounge and changing room, the players' tunnel onto the pitch and the dugout. The tour also included a look at the commemorative displays for the Munich disaster of 1958.

The whole event was thoroughly enjoyed by the students and staff even though they didn't get a chance to meet any of the players or the manager.

Cross Country Win
Cross Country winPE staff would like to thank all students who represented their year groups and gave it their all, at the Cross Country yesterday in difficult conditions.
Overall team results have not been collated as yet but without a doubt Calder Year 7 boys won! Scores from the first six runners totalled 44 - not a bad average I would say!

Finlay, Year 7, led all the way and was pipped in the final 30m by a boy whose legs were the same size as Finlay! Never mind Finlay, you will beat him next year! The rest of the team packed well with six of the top 15 places taken by runners from Calder.

Clodagh and Lucy finished a creditable 18th and 24th for the Year 7 girls team. Great performance from Max finishing 3rd in the Year 8 boys' race. Their results were outstanding when one considers the elite athletes competing in this race. The winner is representing West Yorkshire in the English Schools XC later this month.

Very well done to Esme and Harriet who finished a respectable 8th and 17th in the year 8 girls race.

Year 10 boys:  Max led the lads home in 3rd place  with excellent performances from Sean, Oliver and Josh. Y10 girls: you were amazing too!

Final thanks to Mr Mulholland who ran almost every race encouraging and cajoling the runners! And many thanks also to Mary Smith for collecting results and organising pupils.

Sportsmark

Sportsmark logoCalder High School has been re-designated with the prestigious Sportsmark award. The award has been made following a detailed analysis of sporting activity in all year groups, and there are now 90% of students doing two hours a week of quality PE and extra-curricular activities.

Head of the PE department, Mrs C Lee, said: "We have widened our extra curricular activities to access the needs of more students by buying new equipment such as a trampoline and 4 table tennis tables. We run new clubs in these as well as all our traditional sports which we continue to have great success in."

There has been particular success in football, and a development plan for netball which has "risen in profile massively" says Mrs Lee. "We also have large uptake at GCSE and A level which helps students to reach their two hours of quality PE. We are constantly looking at innovative ways of increasing physical activity for our students, with fun runs at Christmas, inter-form events and an event coming up for national mountain biking week."

A new course in Archery for beginners started at the end of April, available for students in Years 7,8 and 9. The four week course will be delivered by qualified coaches and successful candidates will receive a certificate.
