National Sport Week

hits Calder High from Monday 28 June to Friday 2 July

The week is a week of celebrating school sport across the country designed to raise the profile of sport in schools and the local community. At Calder the PE department work hard to allow students to access more than three hours of quality sport in curriculum time and after school sport and we are fully committed to encouraging our students to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Last year we all learned a new sport...handball, and committed to do more physical activity in that week. This year Calder's pledges are

  • To play as part of a team
  • To join a local community sports club

During the week all students will have the opportunity to play in our very own World Cup competition where each form will play as a country in the World cup and there will be awards for best dressed team, supporters, fair play and top goal scorers! Also to encourage teamwork, Years 7 and 8 will compete in an interform rounders competition.

Joining a club helps students to increase their participation and work towards our goal of five hours PE & sport per week! If you are a member of a local community Sports club then during National School Sports Week take a friend along. All students will receive a flyer next week of all the local clubs they can join.

So come on - get involved and hopefully Sport Week will encourage, inspire and motivate you to take up more sport and enjoy a healthier, more focused lifestyle!!

Remember the journey to the Olympics starts with School Sport!!

Girls' Rugby team hit the heights
Girls' Rugby team

After training for just 3 months the year 8 rugby league team qualified for the English Schools Tournament, by beating off rivals from Calderdale and West Yorkshire in fierce competitive tournaments. They attended the tournament in Wigan in May and were aiming to reach the final, as those 2 teams got to play at Wembley Stadium!

The girls played well and competed against some experienced, athletic opposition. They won, drew and lost games to gain 4th place overall! This is a fantastic achievement for all involved, including their coach Emily Crampton (Year 11). Well done!

Girls' Rugby training is on a Wednesdays 3:00 to 4:15.

Sports results round-up (Reports by Miss J Davies)

Congratulations to the under-14 Girls' Rugby League team

Girls' rugby team Girls' rugby team

Well done to the under 14 rugby league team who qualified to compete in the Yorkshire championships by gaining 2nd place in the Calderdale Champion Schools competition.

The team of: Lucy Wood, Katy Bridgeman, Olga Machado Legal, Charlotte Gibbons, Samantha Cawkwell, Rosie Orford, Amy Harris, Beth Reeder, Amy Oliver, Amy Sim, Beth Sutcliffe have been training weekly with coach Beth Greenwood (Huddersfield Ladies RFU player) and rugby official Emily Crampton.

They have been working extremely hard to improve their skills and gel as a team. One day they even involved medical assistance as an ambulance was called after a particularly mean tackle and a temporary paralysis!

The girls fought hard on the day resulting in some brilliant performances and a few injuries, including Beth Reeder having her hair pulled in a high tackle, and Katie Bridgeman losing a tooth! CHS beat North Halifax Grammar and drew with David Young, Castleford and South Craven to come 4th overall.

Well done to all the players - they did CHS proud! And good luck to the girls for a tag tournament on May 21st. Rugby training is on Wednesdays 3-4pm.

Calderdale Netball squad
Olga
Olga Machado-legal has been scaling the heights of the netball world this winter. She has been performing very well for school and was nominated for area trials. Olga has been selected for the Calderdale netball squad and has represented her area in numerous tournaments this season. She is a fantastic role model for anyone involved in sport and has been a great captain for the successful Year 8 netball team.

Tumbling gymnast
Katie
Katie Harper is attending the British gymnastic tumbling finals in Stoke this month. She has been training for 8 years for the opportunity to represent her nation. Katie is passionate about tumbling and when asked what is her favourite thing about the sport she could not pin point one specific area saying ‘I just love it!’ What an excellent young sporting role model.

Tumbling club is after school on a Wednesday (see Mrs M Smith for more details).

Calder High Give Brave Performance in Cup Semi
(Report by Miss J Davies)

The Year 7 boys' football team made the journey over to North Halifax High knowing that a win today would see them through to the final of the Calderdale Cup. Calder started the game brightly and created a few early chances and they were linking up well down the wings, with Oli McEwan and Henry Fitzsimmons causing the Halifax full-backs all sorts of problems. Midway through the first half Calder managed to force a corner after some good work down the left hand side. The ball was whipped into the box at pace, and it was met by Kurtis Elder who rose above the Halifax defence to send a powerful header into the back of the net.

Calder then seemed to take their foot off the gas and allowed Halifax too much time and space on the ball. Laurie Ellis made a few vital interceptions to keep Halifax at bay and George Gill put in a few solid tackles. The home side kept battling however, and were rewarded with an equaliser when a flowing move was converted by the Halifax forward, curling the ball past the outstretched fingertips of Alex Mawby in the Calder goal. Halifax then took the initiative and pressed forward forcing Calder back towards their own goal. Calder defended well but were eventually undone when Halifax found themselves with a man over, who gratefully fired the ball into the net to give his side the lead. Calder heads dropped, and Halifax sensed that this was their chance to push for the goal that would surely kill off Calder’s hopes. Halifax were gifted a glorious chance to score their third goal when they were awarded a penalty for a foul just inside the penalty area, only for the Calder captain, Alex Mawby, to make a fantastic save and for the rebound to be blazed high over the bar. The team were lifted and they battled for every ball, Joe Horner in the centre of midfield put in particularly solid performance. With the half time whistle a few minutes away Calder survived another scare when Halifax were presented with an open goal after the Calder keeper could only parry a shot. The forward seemed certain to score, but somehow Lewis Coneron managed to throw himself in the way and save a certain goal. Calder went in at half time 2-1 down but with everything to play for.

Calder introduced Cameron Andrew, Alec Miller and Joe Mason-Jones at half time, and were told to keep their discipline and stick to the game plan if they were to get anything from the game.

Calder went out for the second half with a renewed belief, but they quickly found themselves 3-1 down after a Halifax counter attack resulted in a well taken goal. Time was ticking away and Calder seemed unable to break down the Halifax defence. With 5 minutes remaining Calder were awarded a free-kick around 25yards out, and to the right of the goal. Shiraz Khan stepped up and smashed the ball across the keeper into the top corner to bring Calder within one goal of levelling the game. The momentum was with the away side now and they pushed on looking for the equaliser, and it came from an unlikely source. The ball was whipped in from the right onto the head of Khan who could only direct his effort onto the crossbar, as the ball dropped it fell to Euan Davies who smashed the ball home from close range to level the scores at 3-3. With only a minute remaining Calder carved out another chance with Tom Hosker going close but just unable to steer his effort on target. At full time the teams were still locked at 3-3, meaning the game went into extra-time.

The first half of extra-time saw both teams go close but neither could grab the elusive goal to send them through to the final. The second half was much the same, however, with 30 seconds left on the clock a Halifax effort could only be parried by Mawby and the striker was quickest to pounce on the rebound and score the goal that to his team to the cup final.

The Calder High boys were clearly upset by being knocked out of the cup so close to getting to the final, however they can all be proud of their performance and progress this season. They will be looking forward to going all the way next season, and in the seasons to come.

Dance fever hits PE lessons!
Dance mats
The introduction of dance mats in year 11 PE lessons has been a success. At the end of last term our Schools Sports Co-ordinator, Mrs M Smith, got Calder High School pupils involved in an excellent programme to encourage older female pupils to keep fit and active.

The dance mats are wired up to a projector, so the contestants can be pitched against each other, and the organisers arrange some team building activities involving a dance mat and some extra equipment to encourage the pupils to work together. The dance mats will continue to be in year 11 PE lessons and are also running as an after school club, available to all year groups, on Wednesdays 3-4pm.

Year 7
Year 7 Netball team
The year 7 netball team of: Rachel Littleboy, Georgia Whitehouse (Captain), Ozzty Wilby, Mia Cameron Foulger, Claudia Lees, Francesca Barnes, Lucy Wilby, Martha Salter and Chloe Harkness represented Calder High School at the Calderdale netball tournament on Wednesday 17th March.

They started well with a win against Ryburn; 6-1 and Rachel Littleboy being named player of the match for her excellent interceptions. The results went the other way for our next 3 matches as Calder failed to work as a team to get the ball to our shooters. Players of the match were: Ozzy Wilby V’s Holy Trinity, Georgia Whitehouse V’s Rishworth, Martha Salter V’s Brooksbank (even though she polayed through the pain of a dodgey ankle), and Lucy Wilby for excellent shooting in the draw against Halifax High.

Year 7 NetballAll the girls involved in netball since September have been dedicated to training and committed to working their hardest against other teams.

Well done to all the year 7 girls involved!

Year 9
Year 9 NetballThe year 9 netball team attended the annual Calderdale Netball tournament on the 4th March.

The team of: Sophie Colbert, Robyn Allanson, Dunyasha Barrow, Amy Godden, Sam Cawkwell, Isobel Elder (Captain) and Charlotte Gibbon played 6 games in total to come joint 3rd overall.

The first game was against Ryburn. This was a tightly fought draw and player of the match was awarded to Sophie Colbert for some excellent defending. In the next game we were up against Hipperholme grammar, we lost this 2-1 with the player of the game going to Amy Godden for her fantastic defence down court.

The next game saw Rishworth outplay us and even though Robyn Allanson played brilliantly we lost 8-0. We recovered out stride to beat St Catherines 15 minutes later, with Isobel Elder scoring some fantastic long shots to secure our 2-4 win.

Our winning streak continued against Halifax High where again Sophie Colbert was notably brilliant and was even being praised by other members of staff at the venue. But Charlotte Gibbon scored some great goals to gain player of the match. The final result was a loss against Brighouse, even though Robyn Allanson again put in a star performance.

The year 9 team played fantastically well and gave 100% in every game. They did Calder High School proud!

Superleague Netball

On Monday 1st March, Calder High students were out in force to support Miss Davies at a crucial Superleague Netball clash. Miss Davies is captain for Leeds Carnegie who were up against her Wales team mates, who form the Celtic Dragons squad.
Support for Miss Davies
The encouragement was awesome; through songs and chants and rapturous round of applause when Leeds Carnegie scored!

The sixth form PE students showed their support by wearing netball dresses in the team colours, and sporting faces of the team.

The atmosphere was electric and inspired Leeds Carnegie to win the game 53-44.

Thank you to Mrs M Smith and Mrs J Brierley for accompanying the students.

Netball
Well done to Ozzy Wilby and Francesca Barnes (7YC), Robyn Allanson (9XA) and Sophie Colbert (9XD) who have made the Yorkshire Terriers Netball Team. The Yorkshire Terriers is a well established Netball club that runs from Brooksbank Sports College (See poster for session times). The girls have been committed to improving their skills by attending training sessions and have cemented their position in the squad. I am sure that the girls will be representing their club regularly on a Sunday. Good luck in future games!

Due to the snowy conditions, there have been a few netball games cancelled this term. They are due to be replayed so watch this space for future updates!

The Year 7 netball team have done extremely well since they started playing for Calder High School in September. They recently took on Halifax High, and beat them 9-5. They were losing going into the 2nd time period of the game but some super sharp shooting from Lucy Wilby kept us in the game!

Well done to Lucy Wilby (captain), Kira Cunningham, Francesca Barnes (7YL), Mia Cameron- Foulger, Georgia Whitehouse, Ozzy Wilby and Martha Salter (who made her debut in the netball team).
