Calder Cricket

Cricket Cricket

A group of Year 7 and year 8 students, who are regular attendees of extra curricular cricket at Calder High went to Booth cricket club. They were given the opportunity to experience the excellent facilities as part of National School Sport Week. The students played a match against each other with everyone getting a chance to bat and bowl. Booth cricket club provided two umpires and a scorer to give them a taste of what real cricket matches are like. The weather and the students' excellent attitude contributed to an enjoyable and exciting day for all involved. Hopefully these students and many others might take the opportunity to play for local cricket clubs who cater for youngsters.

Booth Cricket Club train on Friday nights from 6:30 to 8:00pm. For more information, see Mr R Slater, PE teacher.

The pupils involved in the cricket are:

Boys' Football Results 2008
Calder VI Champions

The sixth form team are champions! They have won the U18 Calderdale Cup, beating Hipperholme and Lightcliffe in a nailbiting final that went to penalties.

Two more finals played on 30 April (Report by Mr Potter)

WOW!!!!  What a night of football!
Year 11 Cup Final team

"A MASSIVE MASSIVE thank you to all of the staff that turned up to Brighouse Town to support our lads. The atmosphere was amazing and I felt so proud to be a teacher at Calder! Your cheers and support helped the lads and made the night a truely unforgettable experience!

It was a night of mixed results. The year 9 team were very unlucky against a strong Rastrick side. There were great individual performances from George Brooks, Chris Greenwood and Jordan Mirza, but the team were pipped to the title and lost 5-2.
The score didn't really reflect the match, but the team showed real spirit and determination throughout.

Then there was the year 11 game. The lads at the end of the game said: "that was the best football game I have ever played in! It was awesome!"

I think that really sums up the game of football that was played! 1-0 to 1-1. 2-1 to 2-2. 3-2 to 3-3 and then finally after an hour of such exciting football Calder scored another 2 goals and the game finished at 5-3!

The whole team played fantastic and all deserve a massive pat on the back. There were great performances from Johnny Cowens, Jack Earle, George Bamford, Tom Willars and Joel Cleary (Man of the match). What an end to their time at Calder High and Calder High PE!

Thank you from a very muddy Mr Potter and the rest of the PE team!"

Year 8...nearly a third final!
The Year 8 football team narrowly missed out in a place in the Calderdale Cup final by losing to Rastrick 4-3! The score is not a true reflection on the boys as they were the better team, even though they were massively outsized!

Our team went 1-0 up, then Rastrick equalised. We then went 2-1 up, then Rastrick equalised. We then went 3-2 up before Rastrick equalised and then 3 minutes before full time they scored again, beating us 4-3!

Our team showed real strength and great character throughout the match and there were some fantastic performances by certain individuals. Ryan Roberts scored all three goals for us and his brother Richard made a string of fantastic saves in goal. Jay Glover was a rock in defence and Jacob Shaw had a brilliant game in the centre of midfield.

Next year this team, if they show the same grit and determination, will win the cup - that is if they grow a little over the summer!

Mr H Potter

Hannah reaches the heights with Great Britain's ice hockey team
(Photo from Ice Hockey UK's website)
Ice Hockey UK
Calder High sixth former Hannah Glen was a member of the gold medal-winning Great Britain women’s ice hockey team which won the world championship in Hungary.
Hannah’s team defeated Korea, Belgium, Croatia and Hungary on their way to the final, in which they beat Slovenia on penalties.

Their ambition now is to play in the Olympic Games and take on world giants such as Canada, America and Sweden who play in the elite premier league. Hannah was one of only four “young bloods” to be selected for the senior team as a result of fast-tracking that started two years ago with the regional and national under-16 teams.

She is the youngest girl ever to be taken to the world championships by the coach, Reg Varney. The head of ice hockey in the UK, Bill Nicholson, now says that the future of ice hockey in Britain lies with the women’s teams and has promised more resources.

Hannah’s father Gerry Pyves said he wanted to thank all the staff at Calder High who had inspired and supported Hannah. “I particularly want to thank those who have shown a positive belief in both her academic and her sporting ability.

Year 8 Rugby
The Year 8 rugby team recorded its first victory of the season this week against Rastrick school. The final score of 38 points to 30 reflected a good attacking game by both teams. Calder were the first team to score with a good try in the corner by Ryan Roberts. Rastrick responded with a try of their own to level things up. Calder dominated the rest of the first half with Jacob Shaw and Josh Clitheroe leading the tackle count. The good defensive display from Calder allowed Ryan Roberts and Joe Parker to run in two tries each to give Calder a healthy half time lead.

The second half started well with the try of the game scored by Joe Parker who beat most of the Rastrick team on a solo run for his third try. Ryan Roberts took his tally to five tries for the game with some great running from the wing. Ryan Main converted six tries to add to the points total. However Calder took their foot off the gas and allowed Rastrick back into the game with some tired defending near the end. The final whistle blew and Calder were celebrating a great win which all the team can be proud of. With two fixtures left to play the boys will be hoping for a repeat performance against Sowerby Bridge and Brooksbank in the coming fortnight.

The Year 8 rugby team have followed up last week's victory against Rastrick with an emphatic win against Sowerby High School. Having lost to Sowerby last year the team produced a great performance to smash their local rivals 50 points to nil. The whole team deserve credit with exceptional individual performances from a number of players including Joe Parker who scored four of Calder's tries. Ryan Roberts who followed up last week's five tries with another three tries to take his season's tally to eight. Lyndon Bowe scored his first of the season with Ryan Main adding the conversions. The defensive performance of the team was a highlight with Jacob Shaw exceptional in the tackle. The team will hope to repeat this performance away to Brooksbank on Tuesday in their final game of the season.

End game!
The Year 8 rugby team played in their final league match of the season the last week in April. Playing against a Brooksbank team that beat them by 60 points last year, the boys produced their best performance yet. Calder High started the better and were soon two tries up thanks to good work from Joe Parker to score in the corner. Their second try came courtesy of good work by Ryan Main with an intelligent kick to the wing for Aidan Clegg to gather and touch down for his first try of the season. Joe Elwin converted for two extra points. Brooksbank came back with two tries of their own to level the scores at ten a-piece at half time.

The half time break invigorated Brooksbank who scored two quick tries to leave Calder with a mountain to climb. However the team hit back hard with some big tackles from Lyndon Bowe and they started to gain territory. Their dominance was rewarded when Joe Parker crossed over with two tries to take his seasons tally to 12. Joe Elwin converted them to leave Calder with a two point lead to set up a nailbiting finish. The whole team were defending valiantly but with tiredness setting in conceded two penalties to leave Brooksbank inches from the try line. In the final seconds Brooksbank crossed over to break the Calder resistance, and won the match with the final whistle blown immediately after. The final scoreline of 26-22 was hard on Calder who if they had won would have gone through to the area finals. Praise was forthcoming from the teacher at Brooksbank who said: "...Calder had improved so much it was like playing a different team." All the boys can be proud of their season and hopefully next year will improve again to end up as Calderdale champions.

Netball Champions
Katie and OttiCongratulations to Katie Glover and Otti Gauvain (Year 8) who were selected for the Calderdale Netball Squad. There were over 70 girls at the trials so this is an excellent achievement. They will join the squad which will play matches throughout the north of England.

Ottie, who plays in the goal attack position, and Katie, who is both a centre and goal defence, will be training every Tuesday at Hipperholme until the competitive season takes off.

Both are involved in other sports, including hockey, football and athletics. They are members of Halifax Harriers, doing both track and cross country running. Ottie plays football for Hebden Bridge Saints, and Katie is a dancer, and will shortly be appearing in Fame with the Calder Valley Youth Theatre.

Ottie says that she enjoys netball because “it is not so aggressive as football. It’s a great competitive team sport and you can be involved with your friends. Football can get too aggressive.”

She and Katie both want to be PE teachers eventually. They are looking forward to playing at the highest level. Said Katie: “I went to see an international match when the England team were playing at the MEN arena. It was great. It was so fast you could hardly see the ball move.”
